What is AIMO?

The Australian Intermediate Mathematics Olympiad (AIMO) is a competition for students in Year 8-11. It recognizes and challenges talented young mathematicians, enhancing their interest and skills in math.


Exam Format

The 4-hour AIMO exam includes:

  • 8 problems with integer answers

  • 2 detailed proof problems

It tests both computation and logical reasoning.



Who Should Participate?

Ideal for Years 8-11 students who:

  • Excel in the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) with at least a Distinction

  • Understand Olympiad-level problem-solving


Exam Topics

Topics include but not limited to:

  • Parallels

  • Similarity

  • Pythagoras’ theorem

  • Diophantine equations

  • Counting techniques

  • Expansion and factorisation

  • Inequalities

  • Sequences and series

  • Number bases

  • Methods of proof

  • Congruences

  • Circles and tangents

  • Probability


Registration and Dates

Held in September, with registration by late August. Prepare early!
