What is AIMO
AIMO (Australian Intermediate Mathematics Olympiad) is designed to challenge talented students in New Zealand from Year 8 to Year 11. It is particularly suited for:
· high achievers in the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC)
· have acquired knowledge in Olympiad problem solving.
This competition serves as a gateway to exclusive invitation-only events, including mathematics competitions, enrichment classes, and training schools.
The AIMO gives talented students an opportunity to be recognised and to participate in activities which will enhance their enjoyment and knowledge of mathematics.
AIMO format
The AIMO is a 4-hour competition including 10 questions:
•Questions 1 to 8 require integer answers from 0 to 999.
•Questions 9 to 10 require written answers with proofs.
•There is an additional investigation which may be used to determine prize winners.
Students should submit working for Questions 1 to 8. Partial marks may be awarded if an answer is incorrect but
working is provided.

Registration process:

Exam Instructions will be emailed to you 3–7 days before the exam date.
Student Instructions
You will need:
•A pen, ruler and compass;
•Four AIMO Answer Sheets (A, B, C and D) provided by your teacher;
•10 to 15 sheets of loose paper (A4 printer paper preferred) provided by your teacher;
•Calculators, electronic devices, books and other aids are NOT permitted.
Please take time to read and familiarise yourself with the four Answer Sheets (A, B, C and D) you have been provided.
•Answer Sheet A includes student instructions and a page tally to help you order and collate your work before submission.
•Answer sheets include unique QR codes and cannot be photocopied.
•Write in blue or black pen on one side of the paper.
•Write your name and the question number on all additional loose pages.
•Use a separate piece of paper for each question.
•Attempt Questions 1–10 before trying the Investigation.
•Complete the page tally and check your pages are in the correct order (Answer Sheet A followed by
Questions 1–8 of loose pages, Answer Sheet B followed by Question 9 loose pages).
•Hand the competition paper back to the supervisor.

High Distinction: top 10%.
Distinction: next 15%.
Credit: next 25%.
All other students receive Participation certificates.
Cut-off scores: vary year by year depending on the difficulty of the competition and the number of participants.
