What is UKJMC?

The UKMT (the host) runs a series of mathematics challenges to encourage child's interest in mathematics and develop their skills in schools. The three main challenges are:

It encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems.

 

The problems on the Junior Mathematical Challenge are designed to make students think. Most are accessible, yet still challenge those with more experience.

Eligible year groups: Year 8 and below

Exam Format: Remote Paper-based

Calculators are NOT permitted.

PGA reserves the right to interpret all competition and course arrangements.

Competition format

The Junior Mathematical Challenge is a 60-minute, multiple-choice Challenge.

  • 3D Shapes

  • Angles

  • Averages

  • Circles

  • Combinations & Probability

  • Equations

  • Fractions

  • Geometry

  • Indices & Surds

  • Logic

  • Numberwork

  • Percentages

  • Prime Numbers

  • Proof

  • Ratio

  • Trigonometry

Scoring

Scoring rules for the Junior Mathematical Challenge are as follows:

  • 5 marks are awarded for each correct answer to questions 1 - 15

  • 6 marks are awarded for each correct answer to questions 16 - 25

  • In the Junior Mathematical Challenge you will NOT lose marks for getting questions wrong

  • Answers left blank will be marked as 0

Awards

Top-scoring 50% of participants receive Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates in the ratio 3:2:1 ;

Students that are 'Best in Year' or 'Best in School' will also receive a badge to denote this on their certificates; All paticipant will receive a certificate;

 

Invite around 1,200 of the highest performers to participate in the Junior Olympiad.

 

The 2023 award thresholds were:

Gold 91+, Silver 73+, Bronze 54+, Junior Mathematical Olympiad 125+
