What is CJMC?

Register Now!

Canada Jay Mathematical Competition (CJMC) is a Canadian math competition open to students in Year 1-9 (Canadian Grade K-8). This competition has been created by mathematicians from across Canada.  It was renamed in 2022 from the original name Canadian Mathematical Gray Jay Competition (CMGC) to match the renaming of the Canada Jay bird.

The CJMC is 90 minutes long, consisting of 15 multiple-choice questions based on the Canada grades 5-8 curriculum. The competition consists of 3 blocks of 5 questions with an increasing level of difficulty from beginning to end.

The problems are meant to be a fun fall activity for students and teachers to complement their math curriculum and build students’ problem solving skills.

The CJMC offers engaging problems that allow for discussion after the competition and get students excited about math.

Namesake-About the Canada Jay (bird)

In North America, official scientific, English, and French bird names are adjudicated by a dedicated committee of what is now known as the American Ornithological Society or “AOS” (and before 2016 as the American Ornithologists’ Union or “AOU”). “Canada Jay,” restored as the official English name in 2018, goes back to at least the early 1800s. In fact, by using “Gray Jay’ in its 1957 checklist, the AOU needlessly violated one of its own stated naming principles, namely that “traditional vernacular names should be retained whenever possible.” When a group of mostly Canadian ornithologists pointed out this error in late 2017 and proposed that “Canada Jay” be restored as the official name, the AOS graciously agreed and formally announced the restoration, a few months later, in July 2018.

Topics to Study

The CJMC is based on grade 5-8 curriculum. Topics that may appear on the exam include:

  • Probability

  • Geometry and Symmetry

  • Exponents and Order of Operations

  • Algebra

  • Sequences and series

  • Patterns

  • Simple counting problems

  • Elementary number theory (primes, composites, greatest common factor, least common multiple)

  • Ratio, Rate and Percent

  • Data Analysis (interpreting bar and pie graphs)

  • Integers and Fractions

Why Participate in the CJMC?

Sharpen Mathematical and Logical Skills
Participating in the Canadian Junior Mathematical Contest (CJMC) not only helps students build a solid mathematical foundation by tackling challenging problems but also enhances their logical reasoning and innovative problem-solving abilities.

Prepare for Future Competitions
The CJMC serves as a crucial stepping stone for students aiming to progress to higher-level competitions such as the Canadian Intermediate Mathematics Contest (CIMC) and the Canadian Mathematical Olympiad (CMO). Through participation in the CJMC, students gradually develop their skills and build confidence to face more advanced challenges.

Strengthen University Applications
As a prestigious international mathematics competition, an excellent performance in the CJMC is a testament to a student’s academic capabilities. It serves as a powerful credential for university applications, particularly for those applying to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) programs, providing a competitive edge.

The CJMC is more than just a math contest—it is a launchpad for personal development, helping students distinguish themselves in their future academic and professional endeavors.

Prizes and Awards

The Canada Jay competition gives awards to the top-performing official competitors in several geographical divisions.
Performance-based Awards

Awards are only given to official participants (see the Eligibility page for details).

Students compete in a geographical division. Students outside Canada compete in the International Division

Each geographical division is further divided by grade of the students, as well as having a Champion division that includes all grades.

The most prestigious divisions are the Canadian Champion division (all students in Canada, regardless of grade) and the International Champion division (students outside Canada, regardless of grade).

For each of these divisions, a table of award winners is assembed as follows:

Certificates

All official contestants receive a certificate suitable for adding to their math portfolios or framing.

Students who don’t earn performance award (as described above) receive a certificate that reads “Top Quartile” or “Second Quartile”, if earned, or “Certificate of Participation” otherwise.

Students who earn one or more performance awards receive a certificate that identifies their awards earned.

Frequently Ask Questions

1. What grade levels can write the CJMC?
  • Students in kindergarten all the way up to NZ Year 9 can write the CJMC . The questions are based on the math curriculum from grades 5 to 8.

2. What do students get out of it?

•    Participating in nationally-recognized mathematics competitions is a fantastic item to add to their portfolios if they want to seek an entrance scholarship in university.
•    Gain new experience in problem solving that lets them measure themselves against some of Canada’s keenest math students.
•    We issue official certificates to all competitors and recognize the top achievers publicly on our web site. Gift cards may be awarded to those who achieve perfect scores on the CJMC.

3. What is the exam structure and scoring method?

•    The set of questions is the same for all students of all grades.  All questions are multiple-choice.  There are:
•    Five introductory questions, worth 5 points each;
•    Five intermediate questions, worth 5 points each; and
•    Five advanced questions, worth 6 points each.
•    Maximum score: 80 points.
•    To discourage guessing, we award 1 point for any question left unanswered.
•    It’s multiple choice, so you don’t need to “show your work”, but can use scrap paper.
