What is UKIMO?

The UKMT (the host) runs a series of mathematics challenges to encourage child's interest in mathematics and develop their skills in schools. The three main challenges are:

The top 40% of students taking UKIMC get a certificate, and UKIMO is the follow-on round to UKIMC.
How does the competition work?
UKIMO is sat by the top 500 scorers from each school year (year 9, year 10 and year 11) in the Intermediate Maths Challenge and consists of three papers. 'Cayley', 'Hamilton' and 'Maclaurin' are named after famous mathematicians.
The paper the student will undertake depends on the year group that student is in (Cayley for those in year 9 and below, Hamilton for year 10 and Maclaurin for year 11)
Fees for the UKIMO (all-year level) are $100 or $200 per student (please see below*).

If you attended UKIMC: qualified students of UKIMC will receive a formal invitation to the follow-on round (such as UKIMO)!
This invitation will specify which follow-on round you have qualified for and the date it will take place.
*If you attended UKIMC and have qualified for UKIMO, the entry fee is $100. If you are not qualified for UKIMO, the entry fee is $200.
Competition format
Each paper contains six questions. Each question is worth 10 marks, and the total mark is 60.
Each solution is marked out of 10 on a 0+ and 10- scale; that is to say, if an answer is judged incomplete or unfinished, it is awarded a few marks for progress and relevant observations, whereas if it is presented as complete and correct, marks are deducted for faults, poor reasoning, or unproven assumptions.

Awards
The highest-scoring participants each receive Certificates of Distinction and Merit.
Each of the top 20 scorers receives a gold medal, the next 30 receive a silver medal, and the next 50 receive a bronze medal.
All medalists will also be awarded a book prize; the title varies yearly.
Each qualifying student receives a Certificate of Qualification or Participation, depending on their entry route.

Merit: 20+, Distinction: 33+, Bronze Medal: 38+, Silver Medal: 44+, Gold Medal: 51+, Book prize: 38+

Merit: 13+, Distinction: 28+, Bronze Medal: 31+, Silver Medal: 36+, Gold Medal: 44+.
